Fair by Design

How can discrimination against user groups by AI be avoided during the development or application of AI in the market? The Fair by Design project aims at closing the gap between theoretical ethical guidelines and practical application.

The Laura Bassi 4.0 project ‘fAIr by design’ aims at reducing the risk for discrimination by AI (based on gender, age, origin and other dimensions) already during AI development. The project goal is to close the gap between theoretical ethical guidelines and practical application, by developing a new interdisciplinary process model incorporating social fairness into technical AI development, together with a ready-to-use fairness toolbox. AI developers and decision makers in AI applying organizations, represented with five concrete use cases in the project consortium, will benefit from the new solution which is co-developed by the consortium partners. The consortium is a highly interdisciplinary team, consisting of four SMEs, two universities, one non-profit limited company and one large enterprise, and includes the targeted involvement of diverse societal stakeholders and experts from various fields.
